A section of a main road connecting Newport with the West Wight has been closed this morning (Thursday) as a result of a landslip.
Island Roads’ clean-up crews are on scene on Calbourne Road/B3401 at Apesdown, having been called at around 10:30.
The road has previously been under 2-way traffic lights due to the precarious position of the slip.
The road is now completely blocked between Rowridge Lane and Pump Lane whilst the detritus, which has fallen onto the road, is removed. Motorists are having to divert via Betty Haunt Lane and Elm Lane.
Southern Vectis Route 7 buses are also diverting as a result.
It is unclear as to how long it will take to remove the earth.
Let’s hope Bonchurch is ok with all this rain.

Island Roads don’t believe in repairing landslips. Anyone driven direct from St.Lawrence to Niton in the last 10 years? Any plans to rebuild the Military Road further inland between Freshwater Bay and Compton? No, thought not. Seems they’ll only be happy when West Wight is isolated from the rest.
