The number of Island residents claiming the unemployment benefit Jobseekers Allowance is now at the lowest it has been in nearly six years, according to figures released today (Wednesday).
1,755 people living on the Isle of Wight were claiming JSA during June, a drop of 275 from May this year.
Now, just 2.1% of 16-64 year olds living here are claiming JSA, which is 0.3% less than the national average, but 0.7% more than the South East.
Island Echo readers have expressed their thoughts on the statistics previously announced, saying that it is not clear if the rapid decrease in claimants is related to tough new sanctions on those claiming benefits, rather than people getting back into work.
