Young Isle of Wight rider Finley Manser-Grundy has taken on his first-ever mini downhill mountain bike race at the iconic Forest of Dean, competing for Wightlink CRT against older and more experienced riders in challenging weather conditions.
Finley, who only turned 7 earlier this year, entered the 8–9-year-old category on a tough Black-graded downhill course. Known for its steep drops, tight turns and technical terrain, the course proved to be one of the most demanding he has ever ridden.
Despite being the youngest competitor in the field and riding the smallest bike, Finley delivered a clean first run, seeding 6th overall. Conditions over the weekend were extremely difficult, with heavy rain turning the course into a mud bath.
On his second run, Finley looked confident and pushed hard to improve his time. However, a crash near the end of the track cost him valuable seconds. He still managed to finish 7th overall – a strong mid-pack result for a first-time racer.

“I’m so proud of Finley – despite the crash, he came away from the event loving the experience and has gained great insight for future racing at this level.
