The Isle of Wight Sheepdog Trials return to Ashey this weekend (Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th June), bringing together some of the UK’s most skilled handlers and their dogs for 2 days of competition, countryside tradition and community fundraising.
Now in its 4th year, the free-to-attend event has quickly become a highlight of the rural calendar.
Around 50 sheepdogs are expected to compete across both days, with handlers travelling from across the country to take part in national qualifying trials.
The trials not only showcase the bond between dog and handler but also raise vital funds for Mountbatten Hospice. In 2024, the event donated an impressive £17,659 to the charity, thanks to strong public support and local sponsorship.
Spectators can expect a relaxed atmosphere in the scenic Ashey countryside, with food and drink from Island favourites including Goddards Brewery, Brownrigg and Hazelgrove burgers, and Calbourne Classics cakes and ice cream.
The event is organised by a voluntary committee and supported by key sponsors including Red Funnel, Go Internet and BCM. The land and sheep are generously supplied by farmer Angus Baird and landlord Alan Aylett.
Gates open from 08:00 on both days, with plenty of space for picnics and family-friendly viewing. Entry is free with charity donations encouraged.
Proceeds from this year’s trials will once again go directly to Mountbatten Isle of Wight.
It’s a great event but this time the weather won’t be so kind.
The last sheep dog trials that I went to, 80% were found guilty.
