The Isle of Wight took 4 gold medals on Day 5, advancing to 5th place in the 2023 NatWest Island Games medals table.
The Isle of Wight has now amassed a total of 34 podium places, including 13 gold, 14 silver and 7 bronze.
The shooting team has won the lion’s share of Isle of Wight medals – 8 gold, 10 silver, 4 bronze – 22 in total. Day 5 was yet another golden day for our hot shot shooting squad, who struck gold in the English Individual Sporting shooting discipline in both the male and female categories.
Daniel Bishop took gold in the men’s event. Remarkably, the Isle of Wight won all 3 medals on offer, with Lee Pitman winning silver and Mark Downer bagging bronze. Jennie Cartwright also won gold in the women’s event, with the Isle of Wight’s Katie Bishop taking silver.
In Athletics, Nick Percy took gold for the Isle of Wight in the discus. Nick threw a distance of 58.33 metres to set a new Island Games record.
In Swimming, Abigail Lacey made a splash by taking gold in the 100m individual medley to add to the silver she had won in the 200m event earlier in the week.
Abi is the sister of World Champion Zac Lacey, who won 5 medals at the World Down Syndrome Swimming Championships in Albufeira, Portugal back in October.
In Sailing, Alex Downer, Noah Evans, Charlie White and Harry White won silver in the team event behind the Finnish Island of Aland.
Sadly, it wasn’t all success for Isle of Wight competitors on Day 5, with the Isle of Wight men’s football team going down to a 2-3 defeat to Jersey in the semi-finals of the competition. The men will now play in the Bronze Medal game against Bermuda at 14:30 today (Friday).
The women’s football team were defeated in their final game by the same margin as the men, losing 2-3 to Aland.
Today (Friday) is the final day of the games, with the Isle of Wight challenging for medals in Athletics, Cycling, Golf, Shooting, Tennis and Triathlon.

So does the medal table purely go off gold medals alone? Does anyone know?
Superb effort so far from our lot! Shame there’s the odd overner in our ranks & that our flag looks like something you’d see at a clean beach award ceremony though!
