Residents at Orchard House in Newport recently welcomed Isle of Wight Parrot Rescue into the home to meet the residents.
Lorna and Nicki – who run and founded Isle of Wight Parrot Rescue – brought Red Fronted Macaw Verdi and Cockatoo Ella to the home. Both were friendly birds, happy to allow the residents to interact with them. Residents were able to stroke them and talk to them and were also able to ask lots of questions about the parrots and how the rescue service operates.
Residents were astounded to learn that over the last 5 years Lorna and Nicki have rescued around 500 parrots on the Isle of Wight. These ladies share their homes with many rescue birds and care for them in aviaries outside.
Isle of Wight Parrot Rescue is not a charity and relies on donations to operate. It costs around £200 per week to feed the parrots, and this does not include building the aviaries, buying the right size cages, and vet bills.
General Manager, Kim Fleming, said:
“We are always looking for ways to enrich our resident’s lives. This visit was fabulous because we have residents who used to own parrots, so this was a great trip down memory lane for them.”
Resident, Lillian, said:
“I used to have a parrot called Pepe; these beautiful birds remind me of all the good times we had together.”

Is there one which says “wait for the Sue Gray Report”?
No but I notice you keep repeating yourself much like a parrot. I wonder if you actually broke any Covid rules over the last couple of years, answer is probably yes!!!
What a lovely story in these bloody awful times. 🙂
Would it be more compassionate to free the birds into their natural environments, rather than lamely justifying, imprisoning them in cages, which is not how nature intended for them to live – you know, free to fly wherever they want, with their own kind, in the lands that they belong – free from stupid humans locking them up and treating them like idiots
It’s ok if you don’t live next door and have to put up with there noise. ESP as some live in doors.
Or put up with the smell from all the animals they have
