Bob Seely MP has explained his vote of confidence in the Prime Minister Boris Johnson following last night’s vote on Boris’ premiership.
Mr Seely was 1 of 211 Tory MPs who voted to say they had confidence in the PM, but 148 voted against Boris.
The vote of no confidence failed with the Prime Minister winning 59% of the vote.
Today, Bob Seely MP has said:
“I voted that I had confidence in the Prime Minister as Leader of the Conservative Party, although not without some consideration and only after discussion with senior ministers.
“It is clear that some foolish errors were made during Partygate. Boris has apologised. I hope now that he can focus on governing”.
Speaking about wider matters, Bob has said:
“I talked again with ministers about why a fair funding package has not yet been forthcoming for the Isle of Wight Council. I have been assured they will look at this again and will do so in the very near future, ahead of the ongoing review of local government finance. I will keep Islanders informed.
“I will keep focusing on the things that matter. I have fought for, and won, a better deal for the Island on many issues: we’ve had major successes in the NHS and Island Line funding, securing the future of shipbuilding on the Island, securing priority funding from the Arts Council, having the Island recognised as an island (i.e. with characteristics that require it to be looked at differently), winning commitments to clean up our rivers and beaches, to name but a few.
“I note that the PM is the only one ever to promise an improved funding settlement for the Island, and as such, and on balance, I would rather continue to focus on getting him to deliver on this commitment than start afresh with a PM who has not made, or may not offer to make, any such offer.
“Boris needs to regain a sense of purpose. People voted for a Conservative Government. He needs to start delivering it. There is lots to do on kick-starting job creation, on getting people into work, on lowering tax, on the cost-of-living crisis, on energy supply and on immigration.
“On this occasion, I have supported him, but he now needs to ensure that he is 100 percent focused on the job.”
Good. I am glad to see our MP has not played right into the hands of Starmer.
Oh, but he has.
Replacing Bozo with someone else would have drawn a line under the whole sorry episode. Now the Tories are stuck with the narcissistic plonker for another 12 months with emboldened Tory rebels making life increasingly difficult for him.
Johnson winning the vote of confidence with 41% of Tory MPs wanting him gone is like Starmer getting all his Christmases in one go. Starmer knows Johnson and knows how to make him look stupid (not that hard, to be honest). He’d have a much harder time against someone like Sunak.
As it is he has will be facing an opponent he knows well who has almost half of his own parliamentary party after his blood.
This is Starmer’s dream outcome, a fatally wounded Johnson still leads his lame-duck party.
“People voted for a Conservative Government. He needs to start delivering it.”
They HAVE been delivering it. That’s why we’re in the mess we are…
Soundbite Seely:“I voted that I had confidence in the Prime Minister as Leader of the Conservative Party, although not without some consideration and only after discussion with senior ministers.”
And what about your actual constituents, Bobby?
Because most of us are sick of Johnson and his continuous lying and failure to deliver on any promises while lining the pockets of himself and his wealthy chums.
There used to be a massive difference in voting for Tory not Labour.
Now the Tories keep giving more to newcomers, do nothing to stop them, and pander to the workshy, or those working a few hours a week and claiming everything free to end up better off than most workers now.
Tories should help working people more.
The vast majority of people on benefits are actually in work.
Can you prove that statement? Just playing devils advocate here.
I’m sorry Bob, but Boris has clearly demonstrated his utter contempt for the wider public, has lied and prevaricated all through ‘Party-gate’, and then he wants to change the standards for ministers so that basically he can do as he pleases!
He does not deserve the position of Prime Minister, he is totally lacking in integrity and lacks any moral fibre!
I agree with you totally. I’d just like to add, Boris Johnson is also a PATHOLOGICAL LIAR.
It’s like a school that decides to consistently suspend a repeat troublemaker instead of expel them in the hope that the kid somehow learns its lesson (though never does). But in the end it’s just a question of what drama comes next, and the damage it does to other kids at the school and the school’s reputation.
Where’s your principles Mr Seely?
His support is called a Liz Truss. He should wear it always!
59% hardly shows overwhelming support for Johnson from his own party. But there you go, rules are rules. I guess we’ve got him for at least another year.
Don’t bet on it. May had a bigger majority in her confidence vote and was gone in 5 months.
This country is now run by the national media, I was under the impression that such organisations like the BBC etc. were supposed to be impartial and non biased. Not no more… disgraceful.
So if the BBC said Johnson was a documented, habitual liar would you say it was biased or just telling the truth?
ALL Politicians Lie.
It is all about how much coverage that they receive when lieing,
Some get 100% slated,
Others get no coverage at all and it is overlooked.
None of the positives, all of the negatives.
So one way, that it is cringing.
Even the weather girls try to get in on the act. BBC are a disgrace.
The BBC is actually is pretty impartial. Some programmes have a distinct right-wing bias (Question Time and the Today programme that always give Tories an easy ride) while most of the comedy output (Have I Got News For You) tend toward a left bias.
If the country is “run” by any mainstream media, however, it is the Tory press like the Sun, Mail and Express. Nobody could ever argue that any of those publications are even slightly impartial.
What’s the betting that we get our island Deal money sometime next year just to try to con everyone to vote blue
Why give money to a safe blue seat? Sorry two safe blue seats next time.
We’ll get a definite promise to look into the possibility of revisiting the Island deal.
Of course, it will be phrased in such a way as to make it sound like we may actually get increased support rather than the more likely cut…
Well, I look forward to the next slow motion Boris induced car crash. But let the public not forget that from the very beginning this man has “managed” The Brexit debacle in parliament (and which continues to be the gift that keeps on giving and will for decades), the Covid Pandemic mishandling – ie clearing hospitals of Covid positive patients back into care homes, and the PPE shambles. Numerous embarrassing u-turns on policy matters including taxation. Trying to change the parliamentary rules to protect his mate. Partygate. There are many more but just thought a few highlights would be appropriate.
Trying to change rules for voter eligibility in order to make it more difficult for poorer people to vote is probably worth a mention.
Then there is the way he’s trying to clamp down on the truth being told about him by cutting the BBC’s funding and selling off channel 4.
How long until we are only allowed to tell the official “truth” about Bozo on pain of 15 years in jail.
Didn’t Bob Seely make the same “foolish errors ” at sausage gate??. Feathering his own nest springs to mind!!
Half Sausage Seely had to support Bojo he himself attended a Bar B Que during the lock down thats not a lot different than attending Partygate .
I do not support any political party of any persuasion as I believe all politicians are liars and simply line their own pockets, however, with a golden opportunity to get shot of the biggest liar and incompetent fool of all not taken by the Conservative Party, staggers me. What has this moron got to do to be ousted? There should be outcry in the streets.
“Boris has apologised”
He seems to apologise rather a lot these days,…
Lie about Brexit – apologise
Lie to the Queen (and found guilty in court) – apologise
Break the law – apologise
Lie to Parliament – apologise
& now this conservative government has just given him carte-blanche to continue lying about everything,.. he just has to say sorry when he’s caught out & it makes it all OK
His conduct over Brexit was truly abhorrent.
He did real material damage to this country in order to boost his own political career.
There’s a word for people who do that.
The only reason he is still in power is becouse of the half decent job he done with BREXIT.
At the time, it was real democracy in action, poo pooing all the liberal elite BBC propaganda and sticking a middle finger up at the establishment.
All done by the working classes.
Nothing to do with the Tory’s.
Gob shite.
The Tories seem to want to live in the past,
“Lie to the Queen (and found guilty in court)” = off with his head!
Lets have a far left communist government, then we can take the money from the rich….then we can have more benefits…
Well bob i think you are supposed to be our MP but only hear of you when you think you are doing any good
You and boris have 100% lost my vote next time around. Both usless penny pinching nobody’s
To quote today’s Guardian…
Bob Seely was refreshingly frank and pragmatic. He didn’t much care for Boris. Never had, never would. But No 10 had made him a cash offer for his Isle of Wight constituency that he hadn’t been able to refuse. So he had voted for Johnson. And would continue to do just as long as the dosh get coming. The relationship was entirely transactional and Seely couldn’t have been happier.
Sorry Bob, I think he lied to Parliament and you’ve backed him.
It’s party before country, you’ve lost my vote.
Perhaps you can discuss a bridge or tunnel then so that we are not reliant on the Islands expensive ferries, It must be viable as they have been implemented in other areas, The Severn Bridge, Dartford Tunnel etc
Oh for heaven’s sake! What will it take for our MP to act with integrity and do whatever he can to ditch this amoral travesty of a ‘leader’?
So Boris Johnson made some vague ‘commitments’ and bought compliance and servitude. Didn’t he make similar commitments to … well, take your pick … a previous wife, the EU, the NHS … pretty well anyone? Didn’t he write stuff on the side of a bus to prove the point?
When a news item starts, “Boris Johnson has promised …” you just know there’s no point in listening to the end of the sentence, as it’s worth precisely zero.
Honestly, Bob, you’ve been played.
Vote for Boris and we might give the IOW more money. That is corruption.
Some would call it ‘brown nosing’ while others might say Boris bought his vote. I of course would never suggest either.
Foolish errors……..this will not be forgotten by the families and friends of people who lost their loved ones to COVID. The damn right disgusting, law breaking behaviour by the arrogant Conservative MPs will be their demise. You will soon be history Boris and all your chums who broke the rules.
That’s because our MP did the same have you all forgotten the bbq fiasco
It really doesn’t matter what Bob Seely thinks of Boris, it’s what everyone else thinks at the time of the next election.
I laughed out loud to this:
“It is clear that some foolish errors were made during Partygate. Boris has apologised. I hope now that he can focus on governing”.
“Foolish errors” is not what I would call it. The PM broke the law which all of us were asked to follow. What’s more he lied, and lied about this.
It’s an insult to people to try and and explain this away as “foolish errors”. They were not.
The PM may have survived the vote, but he has not won the war. I doubt whether any promises given to the IoW MP will see the light of day. The PM has lost all trust and authority, and soon he will be out. It’s only a matter of time.
