The ‘amazing job’ done by staff at the Isle of Wight Renal and Dialysis Unit has been recognised with the presentation of the Patient’s Choice Award at the Best People Awards 2015.
Organised by Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, the awards are an opportunity to recognise outstanding achievements and reward those who exceed expectations.
The Renal and Dialysis Unit, based at St Mary’s Hospital, Newport, is a satellite centre for Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust and enables Island-based patients to receive treatment on the Isle of Wight rather than travelling to the mainland. Among their many achievements, they have recently begun training patients on the Island to use portable dialysis machines at home, rather than patients having to travel to the mainland for such training.
The Isle of Wight team is made up of the following staff members: Marion Collins (Unit Manager), Vicki Phelps (Junior Sister), Pauline Woolgar (Junior Sister), David Wilcock (Staff Nurse), Alex Kershaw (Health Care Support Worker (HCSW)), Lisa Smith (Staff Nurse), Annette Lamballe-Armstrong (Dialysis Assistant), Joanne Meszynski (Staff Nurse), Emily Debuse (HCSW & Student Nurse), Lorna Estante (Staff Nurse), Agnieszka Zacharzewska (Staff Nurse), Hannah Rasmussen (Staff Nurse), Carys Davies (Staff Nurse), Tamsyn Cameron (Staff Nurse), Julie Dudley (Dialysis Assistant), Anna Hargreaves (Dialysis Assistant), Caroline Sheasby (Dialysis Assistant), Samantha Cammack Harding (HCSW) and Lynne Lewis (HCSW).
On presenting the award, Chief Executive of Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust Ursula Ward commented to the team:
“You do an absolutely amazing job over there. When you walk through, you get the send of calmness, professionalism and all the patients are very happy.”
Marion Collins, Ward Manager for Isle of Wight Renal and Dialysis Unit, said:
“I feel tremendously proud and have a great feeling of achievement. My role as the manager working within such a wonderful team is so fulfilling and I really enjoy my job. The patients are all so varied and all have different needs but the nurses treat them all individually and with respect and dignity. They strive at all times to deliver the highest standards of nursing care.
“The IOW Dialysis Team is the best team I have worked with and we have achieved so much working together. The patients we care for, I believe, feel well looked after and have shown how much they appreciate our dedication and hard work by nominating us for the awards”.
