Isle of Wight Armed Forces Day returns next weekend, with visitors being encouraged to walk or use public transport to get to the hugely popular event. Thousands of visitors will descend on Ryde on Sunday 30th June to enjoy a spectacular show ranging from the Red Arrows in the air, to the Fort Cumberland Guard on the beach. People are strongly recommended to make the most of the public transport options on offer, plan ahead and leave plenty of time for their journeys. Bus services Sunday bus services to Ryde run every 15 minutes from Newport, Sandown and Shanklin and veterans and serving personnel can travel for FREE on the day. Parking Ryde has a total of 8 long stay car parks with 783 pay and display spaces. Full details including locations are available on the Armed Forces Day website. There will also be a limited number of dedicated spaces for disabled veterans. These passes will be offered via the event website from Monday, on a first come first served basis. Beat the Heat Visitors are being advised to keep an eye on the weather and take sensible precautions if — like last year — hot weather is forecast. Government advice on how to ‘Beat the Heat’ is available on the event website. Health and safety To stay safe and get the best view, visitors must stay behind the beach safety cordon at all times. There is also a maritime exclusion zone for those on the water. These are necessary to accommodate the air displays. Ian Dore, event organiser, has said:
“Health and safety is paramount and before I signed off any of the air displays, I had to be 100 per cent confident it could be done safely. “Thankfully working with input from outside agencies, Isle of Wight Council and our dedicated flight display director, they can be. It’s a Herculean task with many moving parts and so many people have assisted in this. “Incidents are very rare, but they do happen and public safety is very important. Please make sensible travel plans, bring some food and water. Be mindful of the heat and stay behind the beach cordon. “There you’ll be on the receiving end of the very best views, ready to welcome The Red Arrows at 11:30.”

Support those who serve and those who have served. They are the ones who clear up the mess made by today’s politicians.
If you want people to use public transport
make it free of charge on the day
A family of 5 using public transport there and back is
£20.00
Cheaper to travel by car
Pay full respect to our fallen military personnel by voting Reform.
This is the very least we can do to honour the sacrifices and memories of those who risked everything to provide a safe country for themselves and their loved ones to live in.
Few, if any would have risked terrible injuries, broken minds and bodies and death just to allow the very thing they were trying to prevent, their country being invaded by people who want to change our ways of life with many stabbing, raping , looting and doing what the Nazis did.
Respect by Reform
Who can trust Reform?
Vote Independent
Move to Londystan then…
Total rubbish..there have been no heroes since 1945 .. everyone who has joined up since then has signed the form to go and kill… also, what on earth has this to do with the reform/brexit party ? You’re just spouting political rubbish..
Aren’t Deform fielding a candidate that thinks Britain would be a better place now if we had cozied up to the Nazis?
Vote Reform UK all the way, and keep the terrorist supporters out the way…
I think island echo forgot about the railway line and its large park and ride car park at Ryde St johns Station which is only £1.20 per day on a Sunday. Would island echo care to say why they chose not to advertise the railway but did advertise southern vectis?
Not reliable as for running on day?
Provide a proper bus service to St Lawrence and I will use it, else get lost.
Joe, think about it. Get into your car, drive to where you can leave it and near a bus stop, board the bus and then you can enjoy yourself at the AFD. Oh yes, make sure you park somewhere that is free of charge, then you won’t have to worry about being charged. Same applies for anyone not living on a bus route. See you there!
Don’t panic! Stay safe! The sun will be shining and there will be crowds….
Stay safe!!! Is there a heightened threat level you wish to share with us all
Yes, they might complete the Ryde Transport Interchange and get the ‘new’ toilets into non-smelly mode. You can wish!
If drivers were to keep to highway code this article would not be needed.
I rarely use the bus but at the weekend I made the mistake of giving them a go. Bus from Ryde to Newport was fine in the afternoon to go to the festival. Not so fine trying to get back home. The bus literally drove straight past without stopping at staplers. There were at least 20 people standing there. We proceeded to walk to Newport bus station where no bus appeared for about 45 minutes (apart from 5 or 6 which were not in service) Eventually managed to get a bus to Ryde. As we drove up staplers rd it failed to stop again so quite a few people were effectively stranded as this was the last bus of the night. SV should be ashamed of themselves. I will certainly never choose to use a bus again
