Islanders are being urged to donate toiletries and cleaning products as Isle of Wight libraries support BBC Radio Solent’s Soapbox Appeal this January.
Families across the South continue to feel the effects of the cost-of-living crisis, with many struggling to afford everyday hygiene essentials such as soap, toothpaste and shampoo.
BBC Radio Solent’s annual Soapbox Appeal is once again collecting toiletries and household cleaning products throughout January, which will be redistributed to people in need across Hampshire, Dorset and the Isle of Wight.
The Isle of Wight Library Service is backing the 2026 campaign, following a strong response last year when Islanders donated 24 boxes of essential items that were shared between community pantries across the Island.
This year, organisers are hoping to exceed that total, with all six council-run libraries acting as drop-off points for donations — Cowes, Freshwater, Newport, Ryde, Sandown and Ventnor.
Islanders are encouraged to donate new and unused personal care products, including soap, shampoo and toothpaste, along with household items such as washing up liquid, sponges, cloths and tissues.
At the end of the month, the Library Service will ensure all donations are delivered to local community pantries, helping families and individuals who are most in need.
Full details of the appeal and a list of required items can be found via BBC Radio Solent’s Make a Difference campaign, while library opening times and further information are available at www.iow.gov.uk/thelibrary.
