Hundreds gathered in Newport Town Centre this afternoon (Thursday) to pay their respects and say goodbye to Joe Ellis, a brave 13-year-old Island boy who sadly lost his battle with cancer earlier this month.
Leading the funeral procession, police officer Simon Ellis – Joe’s father – drove a steam traction engine from South Street, onto St James’ Street and then down Pyle Street to St Thomas’ Church, where the funeral was then held. The church was completely full with hundreds more people in the square with the service being relayed outside.
To date, more than £80,000 has been raised by the Joe Ellis Trust fund, which was set up to fundraise £100,000 for specialist treatment at Southampton Hospital. Following the sad passing of the 13-year-old, the family have said they will continue to aim towards the £100,000 mark to help support any other families who may find themselves in a similar position.
