More Island Line drama has left school children and commuters delayed after a technical issue has forced the cancellation of almost all trains to and from Sandown and Shanklin this morning (Wednesday) until at least 11:00.
The 07:48 departure from Sandown heading for Shanklin was unable to leave the station with all passengers on board forced to wait until the next planned departure at 08:15.
It turned out however that in that 30-minute period the fault found by engineers was so serious that all trains had to be cancelled, with passengers told to get off and that they wouldn’t be able to use the Island Line to get to their destination.
Children heading to schools in the area now face being late or even unable to get to school after the latest disruption. Those heading to work have been affected too.
In a statement on their website, South Western Railway has said:
“The train crew are in contact with our fleet maintenance team who are investigating and working towards fixing the fault.”

Another joke on the island ….
Getting close to the push me pull non floating bridge…..
Cannot for the life of me understand why the island needs this railway.
When it was being upgraded life didn’t change.
Just coz u dont use it, other people do !
Thiis would not ba allowed to happen on the mainland.
Second class service=second class citizens.
For the amount of people who use this it is a waste of money. Use the track for walkers and cyclists
How wrong you are my friend, it’s regularly used throughout the year and if you had taken a ride during the holidays, you would of seen it was often full!
Probably because they had a well used, regular bus replacement service.
Life has been seriously impacted for me and my Granddaughter with both busses and trains unable to operate at the beginning of this year. I do not own a car.
We walked where we could.
Well they needed a new excuse. I think they have gone far enough with staff shortages!!!
And Soundbite Seely thinks extending it to Newport and Ventnor are viable options when they can’t even keep the current service running for lack of staff and “technical issues”?
All though this fault is nobodys fault it shouldn’t happen if the service was well maintained it doesn’t happen on the London underground maintain are train it’s only a few miles
In just a few short years Island Line has gone from being the most reliable train service in the country to the least.
I used to be a season ticket holder but just can’t take the risk any more.
Anything mechanical can and will break down. Im assuming those that are moaning have never had a car breakdown, or even just a puncture on a pushbike in there life. Frustrating, yes but unfortunately nothing will be infallible to a break down
Do the employees of Island Line play “Pick a card” to see what excuse they should use today? Maybe they could hold a competition and ask the commuters for new excuses and the winner gets a free pass for a week’s travel, the runner up gets a two weeks free travel pass. The company wouldn’t lose any money as the train doesn’t run anyway.
The 07:48 departure from Sandown heading for Sandown was unable to leave the station no because it was there all ready
So sad. Old train was the most reliable transport on the Island and was always full. People are abandoning it because you just can’t rely on it anymore. Will end up as another white elephant
PLUS…..you now have to pay for a ticket…..lol.
This train would be more used if they had a more frequent service the waiting times between trains forces comuters to use other means of transport .
If they ran every 15 minutes in peak times and every 20 minutes off peak im sure people would make more use of them , seems like the train is only run fo the wightcat service
