Island businesses are being invited to a Green Impact networking breakfast, hosted by local sustainability leaders Liz Earle, on Tuesday 29th January.
The breakfast event will explain to Isle of Wight businesses how they can join a growing network of companies taking action to make the Island a greener, cleaner place to live and work and get accredited for those actions.
The Green Impact programme is for businesses and organisations that by making small changes to their organisation they can benefit the environment and their bottom line.
Set up by the National Union of Students (NUS) and working on the Island in collaboration with the Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce and the Isle of Wight Council, the accreditation system will be free for the first 2 years, thanks to financial support from 11 Island businesses and the Council.
Students at the Isle of Wight College will be trained in environmental auditing and will visit businesses to check up on their green efforts for the accreditation.
Julie Jones-Evans, environmental champion for the Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce, said:
“This is a really exciting programme for students and businesses on the Isle of Wight.
“Students will gain experience and knowledge that they can then take into the workplace in the future. For businesses, it gives them an easy to follow framework in order to gain environmental accreditation. Some of the things businesses can do are quite small, but if everyone does a small thing to help the environment, it can add up to a big impact.
“Already, the project has seen 44 Island businesses sign up.”
Kayleigh Richter from K.R. Sustainability Consultants said:
“After previously working with the NUS Green Impact at University, words cannot describe how pleased I am that this scheme has launched on the Isle of Wight. An award-winning scheme in its own right, it encourages businesses to think not only of their ‘green’ credentials, but Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainable Development as a whole.
“It’s a long time coming, and it’s about time we started taking Sustainability seriously again as an island community.
“I am so pleased to be part of this event and NUS Green Impact again, and I hope we can make it a complete success in the next couple of years!”
