Inquests have been opened into the deaths of 3 people who died when a helicopter crashed on the outskirts of Shanklin last month.
On the morning of Monday 25th August, a Robinson R44 helicopter operating a flying lesson, came down on Shanklin Road, as previously reported by Island Echo.
Emergency services from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service and HM Coastguard rushed to the scene, but sadly nothing could be done to save 3 of the 4 people onboard, who were pronounced dead at the scene. A 4th person survived the crash and was airlifted to Southampton General Hospital by the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance.
Tributes soon poured in for those who lost their lives: Simon Hewitt, 54, a freelance consultant from Sutton; Justyna Czoska, 52, a horse-riding instructor from Banbury; and Wojtek Kowalkowski, 49, a lorry driver, also from Banbury.
At the Isle of Wight Coroners Court earlier today (Monday), HM Senior Coroner Caroline Sumeray confirmed that Home Office-registered pathologist Dr Megan Jenkins carried out post-mortem examinations on 27th August. The examinations concluded that all 3 died as a result of multiple injuries.

The inquest has been adjourned until a provisional date of 5th March 2026.
Meanwhile, the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) continues to investigate the circumstances of the crash.

There has been no update on the fourth passenger beyond their being airlifted to Southampton. I hope he or she is recovering from their injuries.
Since when did a flying lesson allow extra passengers?
I read that Sandown airport is an unlicensed one,so not under the supervision of the Civil Aviation Authority.Perhaps that allows more flexibility by its users?
