A body found below railings at a cliff in Shanklin last month is believed to be that of Maxine Thompson, who is thought to have been homeless and living on the Esplanade.
Coastguard Rescue Teams from Ryde, Bembridge and Ventnor were joined by the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service and Police in recovering the body of Ms Thompson, which was spotted by a member of the public around 10ft from the top of Hope Road on the cliff face at Shanklin Esplanade on 15th January.
Island Echo understands Ms Thompson, 52, was living in a tent by the public toilets for some weeks before her death. Members of the public had raised concerns about her mental health with local authorities.
The Isle of Wight Coroner’s office have been attempting to trace family members, however have yet to establish contact and as such formal identification has not yet taken place.
One local resident has offered to pay for the funeral costs down the line, should the need arise, following an inquest which is anticipated to be opened in around 6 weeks time.
