An inquest has this week heard that a Newport motorcyclist died as a result of a road traffic collision following an apparent lapse in concentration that led to a fatal head-on smash back in May of this year.
48-year-old Jonathan Hawes was travelling towards Shanklin from Ventnor shortly before 17:00 on 24th May when he was involved in a head-on collision with a white Renault Megane.
Sadly, despite the best efforts of his friends, paramedics and the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, Mr Hawes was pronounced dead at the scene.
Tuesday’s inquest heard that neither Mr Hawes nor the driver of the Renault were speeding on the 60mph stretch of road.
Jonathan, of Gunville Road, Newport worked for farmer on a Y.T.S. scheme when he left school. He was student of the year at the I.W. Agricultural College. However, his interest in things mechanical took him into precision work with Temperature, Micronaire and Island Sheet Metal.
The Island’s coroner, Caroline Sumeray, concluded Mr Hawes died as a result of a road traffic collision.
