The Met Office are warning of the potential for icy conditions across the Isle of Wight this evening and into tomorrow (Saturday) as they issue a yellow severe weather warning.
Clear skies this evening will allow temperatures to fall widely below freezing, with a mixture of rain, sleet and perhaps some transient snow moving in later on tonight. This mix could prove to be a hazard if ice forms where rain or sleet falls onto sub-zero surfaces, or washes off earlier road treatment.
The South will see the highest risk as dawn approaches, however it is possible that precipitation may not reach the Island until mid morning when the road temperatures will have risen above freezing.
A mix of sleet and hail has already fallen in the South Wight this evening as temperatures start to plummet.
The weather warning is in place from 19:00 until 09:00 tomorrow morning. The warning was initially not coming into force until midnight.
Island Roads will be gritting the Island’s road network from midnight. Find out which roads will be treated in your area by visiting www.islandecho.co.uk/gritting-routes.
