10 new houses are to be built on the site of a demolished hotel in Sandown.
The Isle of Wight Council this week approved the scheme for the site of the former Belgrave Hotel, on Beachfield Road, Sandown, which was knocked down in 2014.
Previously, planning permission had been granted for 6 houses but concerns raised by the developer about wasted space led to a different approach, adding 4 more houses.
A first version of the plans included garages for future residents but the approved revised plans have replaced them with parking in front of the houses.
6x 3-bed houses, with balconies, will be built facing Belgrave Road with a rear view over the sea, but with 4x 2-bedroom properties at the rear of the site.
One town resident expressed concerns on the layout, design, appearance of the site and that it would be over-developed.
The Isle of Wight Council’s planning officers approved the development with 12 conditions, including no occupancy of the houses until car parking spaces had been laid out, construction of the houses above foundation level could not proceed until details of materials and finishes had been approved and a condition ensuring the windows are obscure-glazed at first-floor level.
In the approval decision notice, officers say the proposals would make efficient use of the land, enhance the appearance of the site and street scene, complementing the surrounding area.
None of the houses will be affordable, social housing but from the 4 dwellings to the rear of the property, the developer has entered into a planning obligation which secures a contribution towards affordable housing elsewhere in Sandown or further afield.

That’s the way to do it.
How are they going to get sea views with the big block of flats that stands on the old Royale cliff hotel and the grange hall hotel ????
As the UK is filled daily by those floating over displacing the indigenous population who, wishing to escape such, has the effect that our Island will become ever more crowded.
Yet no more doctors, Police, Hospital staff will be taken on, despite the extra council tax for every home built.
So life becomes that little bit more intolerable as services become over demanded, roads ever more congested, just to house those who ‘decide’ they want a better life but at the expense of all of those of us already living here.
With jobs becoming scarce a truly worrying state of affairs.
Redeveloping is a great idea rather than filling up new green spaces with houses regardless of the buyers.
Its the loss of green space that we should all be concerned with.
Well done on this development and again for making sure the space isn’t wasted.
Let’s just hope its locals that can live there.
It’s all about the money !!
More affordable housing then !!!!
