The owner of a thatched cottage in Calbourne that was destroyed by fire last year is seeking permission to partially rebuild the property, including the reinstatement of the quaint thatched roof.
It was on the night of 26th September that Merlins Cottage on Elm Lane was lost to a blaze that ripped through the property. More than 40 firefighters were called in to tackle the fire, with the incident continuing for more than 12 hours.
Now, applicant Mrs Brown is seeking permission from the Isle of Wight Council to reinstate the thatched roof, as well as installing 4 new 1st floor windows and raising the chimney stacks in order to comply with ‘The Dorset Model’ – a guideline document for those extending or constructing a thatched roof building.
Under the Dorset Model, rafters should be overdrawn and have a minimum of a 30-minute fire barrier and this barrier should also be water resisting.
The new windows are proposed to be softwood timber frames painted white, with the chimney being constructed from reclaimed bricks to match the existing stack.
The property was purchased for £355,000 in November 2017.

Obviously not going to live in it how it is how is this news?
And clearly has no insurance otherwise it’ll be restored by now.
Assess the damage, make the remaining building safe and stable, redesign to current recommended specifications, get approval, get contractors, get materials, rebuild – all in under a year?
You obviously have no idea what you are claiming when you decided to insult the owner.
Thank you.
I am glad you know everything, for your information we do have insurance so please stick your nose in elsewhere as you clearly don’t know what you are talking about. Take your gossip elsewhere.
If the council get involved its going to take years
Good luck it will look amazing once you have fixed it up back to its former glory
Thank you
A home is usually a persons castle, so good luck to Mrs Brown, just hope Planning office or IoW Council don’t sit on application too long.
Thank you June
