Thousands of pounds have been raised for Isle of Wight Defibrillators in the name of much-loved footballer Darren “Daz” Powell, following his collapse during a match last weekend.
Daz was airlifted to hospital following the incident and remains in a critical condition, his current club Binstead COB has today (Saturday) confirmed.
The fundraiser has been launched by Binstead COB Football Club and Binstead Community Centre, with Daz’s family asking that any money raised in his name goes towards IOW Defibrillators rather than to the family.
The incredible response has seen more than £3,000 donated within just 5 hours, a testament to Daz’s popularity and standing within the Island football community.
Daz is regarded as a legend of both Newport (IW) FC and Binstead & COB, with the fundraising campaign providing a way for those who know him to show their support while helping a cause that could save many more lives on the Island in the future.
The clubs have urged anyone wishing to support Daz and his family to donate whatever they can.
The fundraiser says:
