A large screen in St James Square, Newport will be showing historic videos of the County Town this weekend.
The videos which cover everything from pandemic start-up businesses to youth arts and culture were commissioned by the Newport High Street Heritage Action Zone (HAZ) and include interviews with Platform One, Local businesses, Independent Arts, and Isle of Wight Heritage Services Manager, Richard Smout.
Claire Kennard, who is supporting the work of the HAZ and has been part of the team behind celebrations in Newport to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, said:
“Each of the videos covers a separate theme that is part of the Heritage Action Zone.
“The videos are designed to address some of those perceptions that people still have regarding Newport.
“For instance, people still think Newport has an issue with empty businesses, but the truth is
our vacancy rate is well below that of the mainland and we have seen many new shops
opening. I can think of 10 new businesses that started during the pandemic and the reality is
a lot more positive than people may think,” she said.
Martin Gibson, Project Manager for Ryde and Newport High Street Heritage Action Zones,
said:
“The heritage of our town, which still has a mediaeval street pattern, is something to be
cherished and these videos shed further light on the extraordinary history of Newport,”
The videos will be playing throughout the celebrations on a large screen in St James Square.

Its such a shame the council have ruined newport and the rest of this once fantastic Island.
It may have a “Mediaeval street plan” it also has ‘Manyevil’ low life living their now.
Shame as used to be a lovely town.
Ruined forever now by councils and Governments encouraging free movement of low life.
Well i added a comment
It must have got lost behind the filing cabinet
the best ghost town on the island. is there any shops left now. iv not been there for years
Fast food, nail bars, vape shops, phone shops, coffee bars, and clothing for the countless clones all kept by others, like many UK towns now is the main attraction for those still making a living.
The rest seems to consist of masses of red breeding hutches with grey interiors many growing, dealing, and claiming various hard to prove disabilities which one or more in a house hold will be ‘cursed’ with, which keeps the above premises going as to the social housing occupants, all such is ‘essential’ in shallow lives
And the rich get richer……
