A large scale rescue operation is underway at Priory Bay near St Helens this evening (Friday) where a person has seriously injured themselves on the coast.
The Wiltshire Air Ambulance and Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 163 from Lydd in Kent are currently assisting Coastguard Rescue Teams from Bembridge, Needles and Ventnor.
2 ambulance crews from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service are also assisting with the operation at a hard to reach part of the northeast coastline between Seaview and St Helens.
Bembridge RNLI Inshore Lifeboat has been called in and Police officers are assisting their blue light colleagues.
UPDATE @ 20:30 – The casualty has been airlifted from Priory Bay to Southampton General Hospital by Coastguard Rescue 163.
Island Echo understands the male fell from a height and landed on rocky terrain below near to Seagrove Bay steps.
Resources are now standing down from the incident.
It is thought that tonight’s incident is the first time the Wiltshire Air Ambulance has responded to the Isle of Wight.
UPDATE SATURDAY @ 09:55 – The injured man, who was flown to the Intensive Care Unit at Southampton General Hospital, is already on the road to recovery.
Thankfully, his injuries are not as serious as first feared with no broken bones or internal injuries.
The family say they are amazed by the news.

It all seems to happening on the island today
And so it all begins.
This is nothing to when the pubs reopen.
Very true
Why so many just to recuse one? What exactly is going on
It’s a question of having all specialist personnel and equipment immediately to hand for casualty extraction by best method rather than having to wait for equipment to arrive. Difficult extractions require a lot of specially trained “muscle” & specialist gear.
More than ever before
Even so, two helicopters, two ambulances, three different coastguard teams, an RNLI lifeboat and the police still seems like a lot of resources to tie up for a single incident.
Tell me Mark, what price life.
Such a silly thing to say..if that was the case spend the monies that you would on say christmas or birthday presents on food for the starving in the world…your kids mere trinkets that will be discarded in days or weeks WOULD save a life.. life does have a price it due to economics sometimes its very cheap..
It was high tide so the area would of been cut off. The only access is through some woods and down a set of steep steps.
Wouldn’t have happed if they had stayed home and not put pressure on emergency service
Your allowed to go for a walk and this person is one of my close friends please keep your option to your self thank you
full of drink, just look at his close friends English
I will not stand for such wanton disregard for the English language. You failed to capitalise the f in full and seem to have developed a new strain of language with no regard to the once loved apostrophe.
However much I admire your pragmatism, I fear it won’t catch on.
Based on your grammatical dalliances, it’s quite clear to me you take a lot of heroin.
Think it kinda the point of having a comments section…
Another bear grylls stay home the emergency people have enough to do
A awful accident. Is the injured person an IOW resident?
Yes, an IOW resident. Went to school with him. He’s doing much better now it seems.
We watched from our boat off Priory Bay – the skill of the pilot of the rescue helicopter landing on that very narrow beach was amazing! Glad the man is recovering, it all looked very serious.
