UPDATED: Emergency services are currently attending a road traffic collision on St George’s Way in Newport, which is causing traffic delays in the area this morning (Saturday).
2 vehicles have collided head-on between the new Asda roundabout and the entrance to St George’s Park football ground on the southbound carriageway. It is thought one vehicle has crossed over into the path of oncoming traffic.
A third vehicle has gone into the rear of one of the vehicles.
Southern Vectis are advising of possible delays to Route 2 and 3 bus services. Motorists should avoid the area.
UPDATE @ 11:44 – The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are working to extricate at least 1 casualty from a dark blue Honda Civic. The roof of the vehicle has been cut away as firefighters work to free the individual.
2 fire appliances and the rescue tender – all from Newport – are on scene alongside the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service and Police.
The road has been closed in both directions resulting in lengthy delays in and around Newport.
UPDATE @ 12:06 – The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service has now conveyed the rear seat passenger of the Honda Civic to St Mary’s Hospital, although they are not thought to have sustained any life-threatening injuries. A second person has also been taken to hospital.
The male driver of the Honda, the driver of the second vehicle – a VW Golf – and the 3 occupants of a silver BMW have been described as ‘walking wounded’.
A dog, that was travelling in the Honda Civic at the time of the incident, is being cared for by Police until alternative arrangements can be made.
Recovery of the vehicles has been arranged and the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has stood down.
The road remains closed for the time being.
UPDATE – St George’s Way has now re-opened in both directions.
Island Echo understands the driver of the vehicle blacked out behind the wheel, causing the vehicle to travel into the opposite carriageway.
Injuries sustained include broken RIBs and a collapsed lung.
