Haylands Primary School came alive with the sights, sounds and flavours of Europe on Friday (25th September) as pupils and staff celebrated International Languages Day.
Each class explored greetings in a different European language, sparking curiosity and conversation about linguistic diversity. Pupils also took part in activities that highlighted cultural traditions and differences, reinforcing the importance of respect and understanding in a multicultural world.
To honour the diverse backgrounds of the school community, families were invited to contribute greetings in languages spoken at home. These were shared throughout the day, creating a powerful sense of connection and inclusion.
A highlight of the celebrations was a lively French market event, where children used play ‘euros’ to buy items from la boulangerie, la pâtisserie and la poste.
The day culminated in a whole-school assembly, where classes showcased their learning in an atmosphere of joy, pride and unity – proof that language truly brings people together.
Mr Jonathan Roberts, Head of Modern Foreign Languages, said:
“International Languages Day is a wonderful opportunity for our children to explore the world beyond the classroom. It’s about celebrating who we are, where we come from, and the many ways we can connect through language and culture.”
