Isle of Wight author Lizzie Thomas has signed with independent Island publisher Lemon Jelly Press for a new collection of haunting short stories inspired by local folklore, legends and familiar locations.
The Wightfolk Tales, which will be published on 12th December, brings together 10 stories drawing inspiration from the Isle of Wight’s folklore, ghost stories and distinctive landscape.
Written predominantly for a young adult audience, the collection combines original stories with imaginative interpretations of older Island legends. It is also expected to appeal to adult readers with an interest in folklore, historical mysteries and fiction with a dark and magical edge.
Recognisable locations including Cowes, Blackwater, Gatcombe, Northwood, Arreton, Sandown and Brighstone feature throughout the collection.
Moving between different periods of Island history, the stories explore themes including friendship, courage, love and freedom, as well as the dangers of ignoring old warnings.
Readers will encounter mysterious creatures, singing mermaids, enchanted gardens, ghosts and dragons alongside figures drawn from local legend, with familiar Isle of Wight settings transformed into places where the past is never far away.

“I have always been fascinated by the history of the Isle of Wight. I loved choosing iconic Island locations and imagining the stories that might be hidden behind them.
“The tales are haunting, spooky and mystical, and I hope they encourage readers to look at familiar places a little differently.”
Lemon Jelly Press, an independent publisher with strong Isle of Wight roots, says it publishes distinctive books which amplify unheard voices and bring humanity to the page.
