Islanders planning bonfires this autumn are being urged to check for hedgehogs and other wildlife which may be hiding among the material.
The British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS) is encouraging people to #RememberHedgehogs and follow its ‘Stop, Move and Check’ advice this November.
People are being asked to consider whether they need a bonfire at all. Those going ahead should build it on the day it is due to be lit, moving previously collected material to a new site beforehand.
The entire pile should be checked using a torch, with sections gently lifted using a pole or broom. Spades and forks should not be used.
Fay Vass, Chief Executive of BHPS, has said:
“A bonfire pile looks like a readymade home to a hedgehog seeking a safe winter nest to hibernate in – they have no idea of the danger they’re in.
“So take a moment to follow these steps – it can really help save the lives of hedgehogs, other wildlife and pets.”
Anyone who finds a hedgehog should move it, along with its nest, into a secure high-sided box and keep it somewhere safe and quiet away from the festivities.
Once the bonfire has been completely dampened down, the hedgehog can be released under a hedge, bush or log pile close to where it was found.
