The Environment Agency and the Ryde Flood Action Group are inviting members of the community who live and work in Ryde to give their views on flood management options for the Monktonmead Brook.
Ryde has a long history of flooding dating back over 100 years. In particular significant incidents have been recorded in 1909, 1936, 1965, 1999, with more recent flooding occurring in 2000, 2010 and 2013. Currently there are over 300 properties are risk of flooding. To address this, the Environment Agency has been working on several options to reduce flood risk to the area.
To showcase the proposals two public exhibitions will be held at the Simeon Arms in Ryde from midday until 18:00 on Tuesday 1st March and again Wednesday 2nd March 2016 from midday to 19:00. On display will be a brief history of flooding in the area, details of the latest flood risk mapping and options for managing flood risk to the community.
The Flood Action Group and the Environment Agency wish to hear views on flood risk options that include maintaining the existing management arrangements to diverting the sea outfall and the temporary of storage of flood water on the Simeon Street Recreation Ground.
Ian Miller of the Environment Agency said:
“We are keen to hear what the community may think of changes that will affect them. These events will be a great opportunity to come along and talk to the project team to find out more.
“We want to share the project’s current proposals for reducing flood risk to homes and businesses. This is an ideal chance for local people to let us know what they think about the current plans we’re presenting and any concerns they may have.”
