A Sandown man who was arrested after Police found several cannabis plants in his house is to be sentenced next year.
Lee Mitchell, 34, of Leed Street in Sandown, admitted producing a controlled drug of Class B when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on 26th November.
Lauren McConnell, Crown Prosecutor, told the court that on 18th April 2024, Police carried out a search at Mitchell’s address as part of an ongoing investigation.
During the search, officers found a total of 11 small plants, which were forensically tested and confirmed as cannabis.
In Police interview, Mitchell admitted that he had grown the plants but they were only for his own personal use.
The 34-year-old has a total of 34 convictions for 52 offences on his criminal record, with 3 of those offences of a similar nature.
Defending, Brian McMonnies told the court that it was an unsophisticated crime and that Mitchell had planted some seeds but didn’t actually expected them to grow into anything.
The case was adjourned until 7th March so that a pre-sentence report can be compiled.
Yet another waste of police time and resources. The sooner cannabis is legalised the sooner the countries coffers might not look as bad. The NHS can be funded properly. We can get back public services that have been lost over the years. The government are hypocritical over cannabis. It’s fine for them to grow and sell it but Joe public can’t. Something really doesn’t sit right here
I agree with your comments.. after all we are talking about a herb which has been put on this earth for a reason… its time to legalise it…
With so many convictions and offences,
surely it’s time to bang up such persons.
@Eatmyshorts
I’m not entirely sure of the correlation that you’re trying to make between legalising cannabis and NHS funding and public services?
How does having extra pot-heads on our streets (aren’t there enough at present?) mean that the Council will be spending more of our Council Tax money on public services?
If you mean cannabis will be taxed, why would anyone pay tax on it when it’s tax-free at present and relatively cheap, or you can grow your own, as this man has done?
Sorry, but I don’t understand your logic.
It’s really not that hard to understand, if the government legalised it they can tax it. Look at the cases of states in America. The UK is the biggest exporter of cannabis in the world. Unless you’ve lobbied to the government to obtain a licence its illegal. So it’s fine for the government to grow, sell and export but the average man or women can’t. Legalising it take away the black market for it. Frees up police time and resources and the country get something out of it. I don’t smoke the stuff but I can see the benefits it would bring.
