The Isle of Wight Council has approved Red Funnel’s plans to redevelop its East Cowes terminal, paving the way for a vibrant new gateway that will benefit residents, visitors, and businesses alike across the Island.
Plans, which build on the scheme that was previously consented in 2017, will see Red Funnel’s 3 key sites in East Cowes transformed – creating a modern, more efficient and welcoming port that reflects the Island’s character and supports its longer-term economic growth.
Under the now-approved scheme, East Cowes will see an enhanced terminal building designed to offer a smoother, quicker travel experience. Attractive landscaping and improved pedestrian access will make the waterfront a pleasant place for the community to enjoy.
A new marshalling yard with capacity for over 350 vehicles will reduce congestion on local roads, while automated check-in and improved traffic flow in the port will make journeys easier and faster.
Phoenix Yard will be redesigned for mixed-use development, including a potential hotel and shops, creating opportunities for tourism and local employment.
Enhanced connectivity, including new bus laybys and better links to the town centre, is also set to make East Cowes more accessible for everyone.
Fran Collins, CEO of Red Funnel, has said:
“We are delighted that Members have resolved to approve our planning application, and this is a big milestone for both Red Funnel and East Cowes. Our plans will create spaces that feel welcoming for everyone, make our services more resilient and ease local congestion. These proposals have been shaped by local feedback and voices, and we will continue to work closely with the community throughout this project.
“For over 164 years, we’ve provided a lifeline service to the Isle of Wight. Today we’re investing in a more resilient and cleaner future, providing a port that meets the needs of the community and supports the Island’s growth for decades to come. This redevelopment is the foundation of a new era of reliable, sustainable travel and a fleet designed to serve the Isle of Wight’s needs, with resilience and care at its heart.”
Red Funnel will now progress with detailed design work and begin preparations for tender and construction.
Further updates on timelines and progress will be shared in the coming months.

Oh good prices going up then to pay for it all thanks..
There have been various plans for Red Funnel’s redevelopment, both at Southampton and East Cowes going back 10 years or so and with each proposal the promise that it would be up and running within a couple of years!!! Forgive me for being a bit sceptical but I reckon that in another 10 years time nothing will have changed!!
If it’s anything like the Floating Bridge improvement
it will be worse.
