UPDATED: Firefighters are tackling a small grass fire in a field off Stower Place in Sandown this afternoon (Saturday).
1 appliance from Ryde – supported by the off-road Land Rover from the same station – has located the fire in an area close to Downsview, thanks to the assistance of members of the public.
Crews are using 2 hose reels to extinguish the 10 x 5m fire (approx) and damp down the surrounding area.
A second appliance – from Shanklin – was mobilised to the incident but has been stood down.
The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were alerted by a 999 call at around 15:25.
UPDATE @ 16:02 – Fire crews have now left the scene.
Islaanders are reminded that conditions remain tinder dry. Extra care should be taken with lighted objects such as cigerettes and BBQs.
