A full entry of 100 cars have been entered to compete in the first Island Car Centre Sandown Sprint, which will be taking place on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd April 2022.
It will be staged on a specially constructed sprint track at Culver Parade and heralds the return of motorsport on the Isle of Wight roads after a break of more than 60 years.
Originally scheduled to run in March 2020, the Sandown Sprint was an early casualty of the national lockdown, which also prevented the event from taking place in 2021.
The Isle of Wight Council has confirmed that it has approved the Motor Race Order which enables public roads to be used for motor racing.
Promoter Tim Addison has said:
“It’s a case of third time lucky. Fortunately there’s been a great amount of support both in Sandown and across the Island. We’d like to thank everyone for their patience.”
The Sandown Sprint has been sponsored by the Island Car Centre, with Wightlink Ferries as its travel partner.
Will Nicholls is the owner of the Island Car Centre in Rookley and no stranger to motor racing. He has been a consistently successful competition driver for many years and is driving his M-Sport prepared Ford Fiesta RS. Will commented:
“This is an exciting new initiative for the Isle of Wight. The Sandown Sprint will be the first time in many years that motorsport will be back on our roads. As the Island’s largest dealer of quality used cars we’re delighted to be supporting the event.”
The Sandown Sprint sold out in 2020 and as all tickets are being honoured there were no plans to sell any more for this year. However, due to changes in the track layout, there will be a limited amount of additional tickets available for 2022 – just 250 per day. These can only be purchased online at www.isleofwightspeedtrials.co.uk/tickets.
The entry of cars is very high and there will be some real highlights for any fan of motor racing.
The Island Car Centre Sandown Sprint is being organised and promoted by Solent working in partnership with the Isle of Wight Car Club, which is also the Motorsport UK organising club. The Club has been very busy processing applications as well as overseeing the track layout and build schedule.
Chairman Malcolm Smith enthused:
“We’re also very pleased to welcome the Island Car Centre as sponsors of this event. Will Nicholls is very well known by our club members and has been a leading light for motorsport on and off the Isle of Wight for many years. We’re indebted to our members and colleagues from other motor clubs for the hard work that has been undertaken to deliver this first event”.

Great! look foward to Sandown hosting this event for years to come, all good for tourism and entertaining to watch. No doubt somebody will be bleating about it…
What about global warming and noise pollution, it will scare my pets and the wild life. It will also attract the wrong kind of people. What about the many elderly to scared to come out, because of the yobs. If you want these events, go and do it at brands hatch. So selfish of them. We retired to the IW for peace and quiet and not to put up with these shenanigans !!!!!!
You are kidding right?
They will take one look at “Beirut “sorry Sandown and do an even quicker runner…..and yet the motorbike race around Brightstone area”home of Masons and a snivelling Mp” was g en a firm cold shoulder?….??
I presume Dr Jollop comments are a wind up? Imitating what a numpty would comment about something that’s good for the Island but they can’t see further than their nose?
Lol, I just thought I would get in there first to save them the time and trouble.
Good for the island. You’ll have all the idiots driving even faster in their noisy, lowered Fiestas. It will go to some drivers heads who think they can drive faster and better than what they’ve just watched. Trust me, I’m right.
This probably won’t get posted because it’s a negative comment.
