Isle of Wight libraries are set to host a packed programme of free and low-cost activities throughout the summer holidays, with music-themed crafts, story sessions and creative workshops designed to keep children entertained while encouraging a love of reading.
This year’s programme ties in with the Summer Reading Challenge, Read to the Beat, which is running at libraries across the Isle of Wight until September. The annual initiative encourages children to continue reading over the summer, with rewards, prizes and certificates up for grabs.
A host of music-inspired activities are planned, including the chance to make rain sticks, castanets, bell shakers and spin drums, as well as decorating musical instruments and taking part in music-themed story times.
The programme got underway at Cowes Library on 26th July with a Lego Music Day, where children can help build life-sized musical instruments using Lego.
Other events include bird wind chime making at Ventnor Library, music-themed story and craft sessions at Ryde Library and musical story times at Cowes Library.

“By linking many of our events to this year’s Summer Reading Challenge, Read to the Beat, we hope to inspire children to discover the joy of reading while having fun, getting creative and making new friends.

Alongside the musical theme, libraries will also be offering a range of creative activities, including milk bottle minibeasts, paper plate crafts, driftwood and pebble art, flower lanterns, monster magnets and pottery workshops.
Sandown Library will host a free screening of The Magic Faraway Tree on 15th August, while children in Ryde can make their own carnival headpiece during a workshop led by Island Craft Works on 19th August.
Older children and teenagers can also get involved, with dream catcher workshops taking place at Lord Louis and Sandown libraries, alongside rock painting and pin badge-making sessions at Lord Louis Library.
Most activities are free to attend, although some workshops carry a small charge and may require booking.
