Haylands Primary School was filled with music, costumes and maths challenges as pupils and staff celebrated National Numeracy Day yesterday (Wednesday) in rockstar style.
Guitars, glitter and iconic outfits were on display throughout the day as the Ryde school aimed to make maths fun, engaging and memorable for children of all ages.
The celebrations began with a whole-school assembly led by Maths Lead Mrs Gill Gregory, who dressed as Queen frontman Freddie Mercury for the occasion.
Speaking to pupils, Mrs Gregory highlighted the importance of maths in everyday life and encouraged children to recognise how mathematical skills are used in everything from shopping and cooking to music and sport.
Throughout the day, pupils took part in a range of interactive maths activities designed to build confidence and enjoyment in the subject.
One of the standout activities was a Times Tables Rock Stars challenge, where children tested their multiplication and division skills against classmates.
Mrs Gill Gregory has said:
“We want every child to see themselves as a mathematician. By making maths fun, active and engaging, we help children build confidence and develop the essential skills they will use every day.
“National Numeracy Day is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate that learning can be both challenging and enjoyable.”
The day ended with a ‘Beat the Teacher’ finale, which saw pupils compete against staff in a fast-paced times tables showdown.
School Maths Link Governor Diane Hammond also joined in, taking on a group of Year 6 pupils in front of cheering spectators.
Staff say the event reinforced the school’s commitment to promoting a love of learning and helping pupils develop strong mathematical skills in a supportive environment.
