Former Isle of Wight copper and chair of the Police Federation, John Apter, will not face criminal prosecution over allegations of sexual assault, but will face a misconduct hearing.
It has been reported by Sky News that the Crown Prosecution Service has made the decision that it will not charge Mr Apter over 2 allegations of sexual assault as the case fails to meet the legal test for prosecution.
However, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), who put a case forward to the CPS, says a misconduct hearing will be held by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary.
The IOPC has said it has found an indication of gross misconduct for potential breaches of the police professional standards of behaviour relating to authority, respect and courtesy; equality and diversity; and conduct.
In December 2021 it was reported that John Apter had his warrant card taken away as the IOPC launched an investigation into incidents alleged to have occurred between October and December 2021. They concluded their investigations in June last year.
Mr Apter, who joined Hampshire Police in 1992, became a fed rep for Hampshire in 2001 before being appointed the national chair of the Police Federation of England and Wales in 2018. He announced his retirement from Policing in April 2022.

What a mouthful – gross misconduct for potential breaches of the police professional standards of behaviour relating to authority, respect and courtesy; equality and diversity; and conduct. What ever happened to plain English, people make our word so difficult with language,it’s like a challenge to write as much in one sentence!
He’s already retired but will be subject to a misconduct hearing? How does that work?
to see if he is still eligible for his pension perhaps
It’s so that if found proven he can be barred from working for police again. It can’t affect his pension
don’t worry – he probably left a coffee cup on someones desk back in 2021 and that person is now claiming that they were intimidated, assaulted and had their personal space invaded, but didn’t do anything about it at the time and are only showing up now, because they are skint and hoping for a payout.
seems to be the standard these days, with some people.
Another bad copper there’s a surprise
Retired last year, saw the writing on the wall, at least he is walking away with a nice big pension. Wonder how his victims are doing?
The victim(s) of ‘police professional standards of behaviour relating to authority, respect and courtesy; equality and diversity; and conduct’?
Nothing ‘s changed then
