A man who stole nearly £50,000 in goods and cash from his supermarket employer, Morrisons, has avoided an immediate jail sentence.
David Haynes, 28, of Star Street in Ryde appeared before the Isle of Wight Crown Court last Wednesday (21st June).
Haynes – who was employed by Morrisons and worked on the till at the Newport store’s petrol station – committed the offences between 1st September 2020 and 11th October 2021 by repeatedly voiding transactions and or pocketing the cash and other goods.
Haynes managed to rack up a large total – of nearly £46,000 – before he was eventually caught.
At the sentencing hearing last week, Haynes was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment, suspended for 2 years. He was also given a 24 month community order with 35 rehabilitation days attached and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £156.
However, Haynes was not ordered to pay any compensation.

Didn’t Morrison’s just get ordered to pay it’s employees back pay because they paid them less than minimum wage?
Employers committing wage theft is the biggest form of theft, but I’ve never read an Island Echo article about it.
So he netted £46,000 from his activities and has to pay back £156 in the form of a victim surcharge and that is it – he must be sat at home, laughing his head off, knowing he has got away with it.
Crime does pay then
What kind of punishment is that, was the judge his mum
Hang on a minute… didn’t a first time thief get 6 weeks custody last month? What’s special about this person? The courts are making crime appear worth the risk with this unduly lenient sentence!
He stole nearly £46,000 but was ordered to pay back only £156?
Laughing literally all the way to the bank.
Where’s the deterrent for people not to do this if they can walk away with £46,000 plus a year’s wages?
Crime does pay. No skin off Morrisons noses.
