The Environment Agency has issued a flood alert for the Eastern Yar this morning (Saturday) following high levels of rainfall throughout Friday.
Water levels in the Eastern Yar are expected to remain high and precautions should be taken place.
In Alverstone, water levels are now falling and are below levels which require action, however, it will take some time before they return to the seasonal norm.
At Sandown, the river has now stabilised but remains high.
Road flooding is unlikely but Fort Holiday Park will likely be affected by water in the surrounding ditches.
The weather forecast for today (Saturday) through to Monday indicates bands of heavy showers will cross the catchment, maintaining the responsive nature of the river to even modest rainfall totals.
On Tuesday there is the potential for more significant rainfall, so please remain vigilant and ready to use pumps to protect your property.
The EA has checked Bembridge sluice is operating.

Perhaps instead of more houses adding to flooding we need less people in our country forcing fields to be built upon
You’re spot on … any tree felled, any house built alters the water table.
Farmers should be made to reintroduce ditch digging to ease flooding from fields onto the roads. Perhaps community service folk could do the work for the farmers, I say this before they moan they haven’t got the time or the labour.

I have always wondered why when the river floods I never see any EA staff coming to look at the river,do they ever see it with their own eyes when the river is in flood,I see them quite a bit in the area at it in the summer time,don’t they venture out of the office when it’s raining
The river is not that high at the moment,I’ve lived next to the yar for over 50 years,the EA or their predecessors have never even knocked on my door to discuss flooding or even ask how I see how the river reacts to high rainfall,just a load of office wallahs,I can tell how the river reacts better than them after looking at it for over 50 years
