Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has mobilised firefighters from across the Island to a barn fire involving farming machinery near Shorwell this afternoon (Wednesday).
The incident has occurred at Presford Farm, between Shorwell and Kingston.
Crews from Newport, Shanklin, Sandown and Ryde were alerted to the blaze at 15:17.
4 appliances are currently on scene alongside a water carrier from Freshwater and the Incident Support Unit from East Cowes.
Main jets and breathing apparatus sets are currently being used to stop the blaze, which has been confirmed as involving farming machinery.
It appears the situation is under control and the majority of the barn structure has been saved.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service has a paramedic crew and an operational commander on scene with 1 person being treated for the affects of smoke inhalation.
UPDATE @ 18:15 – It has confirmed that the fire broke out in a grain dryer, but the blaze has been successfully contained with vital corn stocks and the barn roof saved from destruction.
1 man has been conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital as a precautionary measure, however.
Due to the scale of the response, appliances from the mainland were mobilised to the Isle of Wight including from Cosham, who were sent to standby at Newport.
It’s not the first incident at Presford Farm that Island Echo has reported. In 2016, a fire in the loft space of the farm house was tackled by the-then Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service.
