UPDATED: Firefighters from Newport and Freshwater are tackling a fire in the loft space of Presford Farm on the outskirts of Shorwell tonight (Saturday).
Two pumping appliances and an aerial ladder from Newport are working alongside a pumping appliance and water carrier from Freshwater at the incident on Kingston Road between Shorwell and Billingham.
The homeowner has told Island Echo that she was first alerted to the incident when the power cut and a passer by knocked on the door having seen ‘sparks’ coming from the roof.
Upon arrival of fire crews, who were called to the scene at around 19:45, smoke could be seen coming from the roof space, however firefighters have worked quickly to contain the fire from spreading using breathing apparatus and a hose reel.
No farm buildings have been affected and no one has been injured.
The British Red Cross Emergency and Fire Support Unit is on hand to assist the homeowner.
Firefighters from Ryde have been requested to standby at Newport Fire Station to provide fire cover in the area whilst the incident is ongoing.
UPDATE @ 21:30 – The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service have successfully extinguished the fire and have saved the building from any devastating damage, although some concern remains over the chimney stack.
It is thought that a wood burner is to blame for the fire, which spread to the rafters in the loft.
Positive Pressure Ventilation is beeing used to rid the property of smoke and crews remain on scene assessing the damage. One crew – Newport Pump 2 – have now returned to station.
