A small woodland fire in Ryde was quickly brought under control by firefighters this afternoon (Wednesday).
A single crew from Ryde rushed to the scene at St John’s Park – between East Hill and West Hill Road – at around 14:30 following reports of a fire inthe woodland.
Thankfully, firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the blaze before it could get hold of nearby bushes and shrubbery using buckets of water and knappsack sprayers.
It is thought that the fire was started deliberately, with the scene handed over to Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary.
This fire comes just days after a major 5-day wildfire destroyed 22 acres of heathland at Headon Warren in Totland.
Another fire, similar to this in its nature, was extinguished by fire crews on Saturday – as previously reported by Island Echo.
UPDATE @ 17:05 – Police have confirmed that the fire is being treated as suspected arson. Enquiries remain ongoing.
Who ever started this fire has absolutely no common sense
Islandwide CCTV and facial recognition is what is needed
only way to stop numpties breaking the law.
I agree maybe we have a serial fire starter that’s 3 now which seems to have been started in the same way

Having experienced the delights of the feral element in town I’m surprised it took that long for them to catch on with arson. That they could cause more damage out in the forests & commons than in town took a while to sink in
