Firefighters of Green Watch at Newport Fire Station have recently helped an ex race horse back to its feet after it fell over in a stable.
Last Friday the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were mobilised to a stable where a horse had fallen over, become wedged against the wall and was unable to get back up.
Upon the arrival of firefighters it was made clear that the animal was exhausted, prompting the vet to give the horse a low level tranquiliser to calm it and allow it to rest.
As the vet was concerned that compression of its internal organs may have occurred, and was unsure how long it had been down, Green Watch initially turned the horse over. Following consultation with the vet, the crew then used specialist animal rescue equipment and the Rescue Tender hiab to remove the horse from the stable and hoist it up, before slowly lowering it back onto its legs.
As the circulation returned and the sedation wore off, the horse was able to stand and a short while later it was being walked around the yard.
Amazingly, the animal recovered enough to be returned to its stable – a really good outcome from what seemed like a bad situation when firefighters arrived.
