FIREFIGHTERS CALLED TO SOLAR FARM FIRE IN ST HELENS

UPDATED: The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service have been called to a solar farm fire in the St Helens area this afternoon (Sunday).

A field has gone up in flames with several eyewitnesses saying how they can see smoke billowing into the sky, which can be seen from far and wide across the East Wight.

Firefighters from several stations have been called to the incident. The alarm was raised at around 12:15.

UPDATE @ 14:45 – Fire appliances from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service have been mobilised to the Island, to assist with not only the ongoing incident but to remain a safe level of fire cover across the Isle of Wight.

A total of 6 appliances and 2 water carriers from the Isle of Wight are currently on scene at Hill Farm off Carpenters Road.

UPDATE @ 17:37 – The incident has now been brought to a close after more than 5 hours of firefighting.

Firefighters from Ryde, Newport, Sandown, Shanklin, Ventnor, Yarmouth and Freshwater have all been involved in the incident, which has covered a total of 4 hectares.

Mainland crews from Beaulieu, New Milton, St Mary’s and Lymington have been stationed on the Island this afternoon to maintain a safe level of fire cover, but they are expected to head back across the Solent shortly.
