FIRE SERVICE CALLED AS FIESTA CRASHES INTO WALL IN RYDE

UPDATED: Police, fire and ambulance crews are attending a road traffic collision on Lind Street in Ryde this morning (Thursday).

A white Ford Fiesta has come to rest rear-end-first against a wall on a swooping right hand bend, where West Street joins Lind Street.

2 fire crews from Ryde are working to extricate the occupants of the vehicle with the assistance of paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service.

Emergency services were alerted to the apparant single vehicle collision at around 01:00.

Lind Street and West Street are both closed to all traffic.

UPDATE @ 01:33 – Efforts are underway to extricate what appears to be a person in the rear section of the car’s cabin by means of a full roof removal. Firefighters are using specialist cutting equipment to enable a safe and swift extrication.

It remains unclear at this moment in time what has caused the crash, but a second vehicle – a red Ford Transit Connect – has sustained front-end damage.

UPDATE @ 01:58 – The casualty has been freed by fire crews and is now in the care of paramedics, who are conveying to St Mary’s Hospital in Newport under blue lights.

Police are investigating the full circumstances of the crash but it appears the Fiesta and Transit Connect collided head-on on West Street prior to the Fiesta’s impact with the stone wall.

The scene is now winding down with recovery of the vehicles expected in due course.

UPDATE @ 06:30 – West Street is now open to traffic, although Lind Street remains closed at the junction of West Street – according to Island Roads.

UPDATE THURSDAYIsland Echo has been told that the Fiesta was being driven the wrong up along Lind Street and up West Street when the collision happened.

Both West Street and Lind Street are now fully open.
