Firefighters are once again tackling a fire at the derelict Ocean Hotel on Sandown seafront this morning (Monday).
3 appliances from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are on scene at the Esplanade as a result of a small fire breaking out within the former hotel.
4 breathing apparatus and 2 hose reel jets are being utilised to extinguish the fire, which is said to be located on the 3rd/Ground floor.
Crews from Sandown, Newport and Cowes are attending. Meanwhile, an appliance from East Cowes and gone to standby at Newport.
The incident began at around 06:20 and is understood to be suspicious in nature.
This morning’s incident comes after a number of previous fires at the eyesore property and just days after the adjoining King’s Head sold at auction for £350,000.
There is also an ongoing legal battle between the Isle of Wight Council and the former owners of the Ocean Hotel.
UPDATE @ 07:18 – The fire has now been extinguished and all firefighters have safely withdrawn from the building.
Crews are now preparing to make up and leave the incident, but in the meantime the Esplanade is closed to all traffic.

I wouod not own a business in Sandown, if I did. I wouod refuse to pay any
Business Rates until this is sorted out
It is affecting trade for many other businesses.
Who in their right mind would want to shop or eat out in Sandown
with an eyesore like this on their doorstep.
Do what you are paid to do IW Council, sort out the problem.
Don’t keep brushing it under the carpet the problem won’t go away buy itself.
It is an HEALTH and SAFETY HAZARD

Some brainless idiot who thinks it’s fun to start a fire. Arson is a serious offence. Shame you weren’t caught!
If nobody can be brought to court and ordered to make the building safe – who is setting all these ‘accidental’ fires?
