Firefighters from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are tacking a hedgerow fire outside a school in Ventnor tonight (Thursday).
Crews are currently using hose reel jets to dowse the flames, that have engulfed a hedgerow which delineates the bus layby outside St Francis Catholic and Church of England Primary Academy to the main Newport Road.
The road remains passable to traffic as firefighters tackle the fire, between Rew Lane and St Margarets Glade.
Thankfully, the fire appears to have been contained to a single area and is away from the school.
UPDATE FRIDAY – It has been confirmed that the fire, which was extinguished using 2 hose reel jets, is thought to have been started deliberately.

Our police will say arson to start with, because they are predominantly jumped up people that feel that they have power wearing the uniform. After they will say no arson, but still be jumped up idiots who only cover what they want to. Truth hurts
Not sure how truth is hurting you, something of a stranger, it seems.
I would have thought a carelessly-discarded fag end was the likely culprit but clearly you are better informed.
Definitely not a discarded fag end!
Absolute twaddle spoken by an idiot. Truth hurts
You have just proved that if you had a brain you would be dangerous.
Like to know who you would call for help if you needed it? Ghostbusters maybe? Actually was arson, failed first attempt so guess what. ..
This happened during dark hours, I’m convinced this was deliberately lit….more scum will be along soon…
It was deliberate it’s right near where I am. Loads saw it.
The snowflake down thumbers don’t believe you or me….
It’s a group of kids about 13/14 who’ve also vandalised the memorial and the toilets.
Get a grip of your kids parents and more importantly police get off your arses from the station in Ventnor !
Several groups of kids causing havoc around town at the moment.
We know who the kids are too.
There’s a hose ban happening at the moment. Please do not do this again!
There were a number of kids/young adults shouting and screaming in that area last night at around 10.00-11.00 pm. They were certainly giddy about something and all ran home to mummy when the first sirens were heard.. coincidence??? I doubt it! With a bit of luck the next idiot to set a fire will end up surrounded by it and learn a really bad lesson.
B-B-B-But remember the poor children of today have absolutely nothing to do…….
These poor souls are victims of a society that gives theim nothing!
Lest we forget the suffering we have inflicted apon these poor children…..
Oh, wait……
Thick as s#@* I’m sure plenty of locals know who the perpetrators were. Police should investigate and put a stop to all the anti social behaviour, if the parents had to pick up the tab for the call out they might keep their kids in check
