A Newport man caught drug driving has been banned from the roads for 18 months.
Russell Voysey, 51, of Prospect Road, admitted drug driving (cannabis) when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court earlier this week (22nd October).
Prosecuting, Lauren McConnell told the court that on 10th April 2024, an on-duty Police officer received information that the driver of a Citroen Berlingo was possibly under the influence of drugs.
Officers following the vehicle noticed that the driver was taking corners at speed. Voysey was followed along Church Litten into Morrison’s car park where he stopped and was approached by Police.
The 51-year-old admitted that he had taken some cannabis that morning. A blood test conducted at Newport Police Station showed that Voysey had above-level amounts of THC in his system. The court heard how traces of benzoylecgonine and diazepam were also found in his system.
Voysey was sentenced on 30th April for another count of drug driving, however, the date of the offence pre-dates the current matter.
Defending, Oscar Vincent told the court that Voysey is registered disabled and that he is his wife’s primary carer.
Magistrates opted to ban Voysey from driving for 18 months and fined him £200. He was also ordered to pay costs of £85 and £80 surcharge fee.

It is 2024, there are no excuses to drink or
Drug drive
NO EXCUSES
I see that the Island magistrates have given this moron the usual slapped hand. He could have easily killed or maimed someone. Maybe the poor dear had a hard early life, well so did I, but I do not go around breaking the law.
