The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service have stopped a field fire from spreading to a nearby copse at Camp Hill in Newport this evening (Monday).
Reports of a field alight behind the now disused Camp Hill prison prompted a sizeable response from the fire service at just before 17:00.
3 appliances from Newport and East Cowes, a water carrier from Freshwater and the Incident Command Unit from Newport have all attended the scene off Postern Road.
Island Echo is told an area of 100m x 50m has been affected, but that the fire is now out.
The cause is currently unknown and investigations are underway.
Dean Haward, Group Manager for Isle of Wight FRS has taken this opportunity to remind Islanders to think carefully about discarding my lighted materials, such as cigarettes and BBQs, during this period of dry and hot weather.
With a heatwave currently hitting the Island the risk for similar fires is increased, especially as there has been no rainfall for sometime.
