Newport’s Fairlee Road has been closed in both directions as a result of a vehicle colliding with the perimeter wall of a property tonight (Thursday).
Emergency services including the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service and Police are in attendance at the scene just 100 metres from the nearby service station.
A 5-door hatchback has collided with the front garden wall of a terraced property, although the circumstances of how the event has occurred remain unknown. At least 1 person is being treated for their injuries – although they are not thought to be serious or life-threatening.
It is expected that Southern Vectis Routes 5 and 9 will undergo diversions.
UPDATE @ 23:21 – Island Echo understands that 2 of those involved in the incident were able to leave the vehicle by themselves. They are subsequently being checked over and treated by the paramedics on scene.
2 ambulances, alongside a paramedic officer, 1 fire appliance and several police units are in attendance at the scene.
Newport’s wholetime fire crew have now stood down from the incident having ensured that the wrecked vehicle is safe and that no one was trapped within it. The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service’s operational commander has also departed the scene.
Officers are assessing the collision site for any signs of what may have led to the incident – which has caused significant damage to both the vehicle and the wall it has collided with.
UPDATE @ 23:59 – It’s understood that at least 2 people have been taken to hospital via ambulance, but it’s not thought anyone involved has suffered any serious injuries.
The recovery of the vehicle is now underway, with the damage to the wall caused by the impact now evident.
The road is expected to reopen by 00:45.
UPDATE @ 00:24 – The road has now reopened.
The roads are not safe anymore, two serious accidents in one night. Get these lunatics of the road once and for all.
Totally agree. At least this time though it did not result in the destruction of a lovely old tree like what happened in the Ryde incident; A beautiful tree that was putting oxygen into the world as well as being a joy to see, Unlike just take take take and putting nothing useful into the world. But no, in our world today, it’s the destroyers who are seen as more important. Too many cars, and too many cars in the hands of the wrong sort of people!
Need to come down harder on car drivers on this island
like all islanders they cant drive
Too right! They get away with just about everything bad they do. Sick of it.
