UPDATED: Emergency services are currently attending an incident at Sandown airfield, where a microlight has crashed into a hangar.
A number of appliances from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service, including the Rescue Tender from Newport and the Foam Salvage Tender from East Cowes, are currently on the scene after being alerted to the incident shortly before 10:50 this morning.
UPDATE @ 11:42: Island Echo understands that the pilot and one passenger have received minor injuries in the crash, which has taken place at the East end of the runway and
involves a hangar situated on the Northern side.
Both persons have been taken to St Mary’s Hospital for treatment.
Emergency services remain at the scene, however a number of appliances have now returned to station. Police have also attended.
UPDATE @ 12:00 – Island Echo understand that the microlight missed the hangar, however landed in a nearby hedge causing damage to the wing and nose section of the two-seater craft. It is currently unclear if the plane was taking off or landing at the time of the incident, however Island Echo believes the aircraft was pulling to the right and the engine was not picking up.
UPDATE @ 14:25 – Initial reports suggested the microlight had collided with a hangar at the airfield, however it has since been confirmed that the aircraft crash landed nearby.
The runway reopened shortly after 12:00.
