Emergency services have been called to a road traffic collision (RTC) in Wootton this evening (Thursday).
Firefighters from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were called to Firestone Copse Road – the country lane linking Kite Hill with Havenstreet Main Road – at around 17:00.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service has also been mobilised to the incident alongside local police officers.
The road has been closed in both directions while the incident is being dealt with – motorists should divert locally.
It is believed the incident has occurred near to Firestone Glade housing estate.
UPDATE @ 17:40 – A motorcycle has been involved with the incident – but is understood no other vehicles have been involved.
UPDATE @ 21:00 – The road remains closed at this time – indicating the severity of the incident.
UPDATE @ 23:00 – A 43-year-old man has suffered life-threatening injuries and is currently being treated at Southampton General Hospital.

This may, for once, be NOT bad driving, as the road is covered in leaves, mud, ruts at the edge, and rain.
Motor cyclist are at high risk on our ill kept, poorly maintained, badly lit roads more than ever since council cut backs.
Still the simple and petty criminals are kept in luxury and comfort, their ‘pot’ being ring fenced, so I guess normal people trying to earn a crust, paying their taxes, coming home or going to work on what they hoped were safe roads, don’t matter as much to the council as ne’re do wells, joey’s and mini gangsters.
What exactly are ‘joeys’, please?
Stan, it is an Island term for mentally retarded adults. I believe back in the 1970’s or 80’s a children’s programme called ‘Blue Peter’ ran a short documentary on a mentally retarded adult called Joey Deacon.
This was supposed to gain wider acceptance and sympathy of retards, but, children being cruel, or just bowing to peer pressure, just took the mickey out of this Joey character, and went about the playgrounds mumbling and walking in an odd fashion.
Thus ‘your a right Joey’ became a children’s insult to anyone behaving silly or doing something odd.
I remember one episode where Joeys ‘helper’ who spoke for him on the show, asked Joey about an event by a river side picnic. Joey said ” eee uuu mm arr gee ” etc etc, in a short unintelligible burst. The ‘helper’ translated this into a long story of ‘How it was a beautiful day, and Joey recalled losing one of his new shoes into the river and had to have assistance in retrieving such, but he had lots of lovely food to eat etc etc.
This caused howls of laughter as he had only grunted a few sounds.
Often wonder if the term ‘Joey’ went nationwide, or just Island wide.

Road still closed at 21:30 when I drove past. If no injuries (thankfully), not sure why the road remains closed? Maybe the motorbike caused some damage to property, which has become unstable?
