A man in his 70s is being treated in hospital after being hit by a moped in Ryde this afternoon (Friday), which has led to the closure of a busy main road.
Emergency services were called at just before 15:30 to reports of a pedestrian collision on St John’s Road, between the junctions with Warwick Street and Player Street.
Police and paramedics arrived on scene to find an elderly and injured male on the floor.
He had been struck by a Peugeot moped travelling along the busy through road.
Following initial assessment by the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service, the pedestrian was taken to hospital for follow-up assessment and treatment.
Awaiting an update from the hospital, Police cordoned off part of the road to preserve evidence.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary said earlier this evening that the casualty’s injuries were not, at the time, believed to be life threatening or life changing.
However, Police have now closed St John’s Road in both directions, indicating a deterioration in the situation.
All through traffic is now being diverted via Esplanade, with light, local traffic able to divert via Well Road and Park Road.

The island is full of motorbikes and scooters riding
around with L plates on.
Do these persons ever take a test, or will they be riding
around the island for life with L plates on.
Hope the casualty is OK.
Not to be pedantic but I think the picture is of a scooter as it has no pedals, it having room to put feet “through the machine.
I remember using my fathers “moped” many years ago and it had a whopping 50cc engine. He never got out of East Cowes because he always wanted to turn left as turning right was too dangerous.
As another thought, can an electric bicycle be called a moped I wonder?
I do hope that the man recovers well.
However; The term “Peugeot Vision 50cc” appears to be a misunderstanding, as the name “Vision” is associated with the Honda Vision 50cc scooter none of which are mopeds
